Meet Karen
Your Pembroke City Council Candidate
My name is Karen Walsh. I grew up in Ottawa and later attended the University of Guelph where I obtained my Bachelor's degree in Theatre. Marriage and a move to the Toronto area came next and a further degree in Education from York University. As a teacher with the York District Catholic Board I spent over 30 years teaching primary, junior, intermediate and my last 10 years in Special Education. Retiring in June 2019 I felt it was time to get closer to my family that lives here in the Valley - Petawawa, Chalk River and Deep River. And then of course the Pandemic hit! We moved to Ottawa for 2020 to see what would lie ahead. On a trip to Deep River to see family, we drove through Pembroke, the Heart of the Ottawa Valley and it stole our hearts. I grew up on this same river in Ottawa! We spent over a year renovating a beautiful historic house here in Pembroke, which we love!
As a senior I became quite concerned about the condition of sidewalks and roads, sewer mains, infrastructure issues and winter operations. We pay high city taxes here so I ventured into communication with the city to express my concerns and inquire….that did not go well. Communication is key and I felt I needed more answers to my concerns and questions. In speaking with my neighbours and others in the community, I realized that they too felt better communication between the City and the residents was needed. People need to feel heard. I may not get you the answer you want, but I’ll get you an answer! And in a timely, efficient manner.
Maybe, the City council needs a Karen! New eyes, new ideas, new perspective. Things can't change if they don’t change. I would be honoured to represent you on council. Let's be Pembroke Proud! Let's get the heart beating in Pembroke…the Heart of the Ottawa Valley.
